Luis Muñoz Marín, a Puerto Rican writer and political leader, was the first elected governor of Puerto Rico. His father, Luis Muñoz Rivera (1859-1916), was elected in 1910 as Puerto Rico's resident commissioner in Washington, D.C. Muñoz Marín was a strong advocate of increased autonomy for Puerto Rico, while believing that the island should maintain its economically beneficial ties with the United States.
